I wondered if any 38 classic owner have had a bow thruster fitted to their boats. We have a  water storage tank below the forward berth and I am not sure if the is available space to fit all the thruster equipment.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,  Keith.

Keith,

I have a 36 Classic. Last year I installed a Yacht Thruster Exturn (180S). I had some experience having installed one on my old Morgan 321.

I installed it myself with the help of a friend. The 36 Classic also has a water tank forward, I hung the thruster right under the settee in the forward cabin. I had to cut away some of the stringer - I'm told, and believe it's need during construction, not after the deck is installed - to gain access to the inside of the hull.

In all, a few days work, a hole no larger that a typical thru hull, and less drag than a tunnel thruster. The only other possibility would have been a jet thruster - much more $$, more complex install, company did not offer much support.

If you have an interest, I have may photos, schematic of the wiring, etc. I'd be happy to share.

Thanks William, I looked at the external thruster as an option if a tunnel thruster wasn’t possible. Interested in your comment about drag with a tunnel thruster. Certainly would appreciate additional photographs and schematics.

I can't speak for the 38 classic, but I retrofitted a bowthruster to my 405. We were able to move the water tank forward sufficiently to leave enough space to fit the thruster.

Thanks Paul, I will look at moving the water tank, I presume that the will be similarly sized, 170 liters?
