I would comment to the OP that, from the nature of his question, it would appear that he has very little familiarity with the systems used on cruising boats, even if he may have some knowledge of sailing, and would benefit from taking a course at sailing school, in the interests of learning how things work in general, on boats, and the routines used from day-to day for the use and care of the equipment. Please don't take this as any kind of personal critisism, but is meant constructively.
