I used to experience the same inconvenience on my 405GL, until I was given a suggestion to put them inside the boom. It turned out to be a simple matter to remove the end plate cover on the boom, tie the battens together and insert them in the boom with a retrieval line attached for subsequent removal.
Might be worth looking at your boom to see if it’s possible.
