I have only yesterday had the same problem and agree with all the points mentioned by Mandy. But – out of curiosity I opened the compass and found that the lead weight had unscrewed itself from the gumball and was catching on the fluxgate housing!. Screwed it back up, re-calibrated by swinging the boat, steered N and aligned the heading and bingo! Back in business. Success.
