HI Dave, Not sure but when I spoke to someone in the factory a while ago they stated that they used clear satin varnish, water based of course as is todays standard. This tends not to colour the wood as a poly varnish would. Whether this is true or not I am not sure. I am currently doing exactly the same on mine this is an obvious place for wear and damage. The tread sides are using solid wood (on my boat – a 360), as are all the edges, and this is good for repair. I am trying a small unobtrusive section of the steps at the moment. Sanding down fully to remove all the ingrained dirt is a good thing to do. One other point is that this wood naturally darkens with age so exposing new wood may come up lighter.

    Just a few thoughts.
