Last year we did what you are wishing to do. After some research and thinking, I decided to have a Raymarine system installed. Mostly because I was happy with the original AutoHelm products and the “simple” options still available through this platform (and because of the extensive network of support/installers where I am planning to sail).

The system has an Element 7 chartplotter in the cockpit (see attached) accompanied by the small autopilot controls (Evolution) and the i70 navigation display. There is a second i70 display down below the chart table.

Overall, my experience so far has been excellent. We had an Azores trip last year and an extensive cruise to Ireland this summer.

I supplement this with an iPAD equipped with Navionics charts and IMRAY tide data to be used down below, when moored. Plus a set of paper charts for back-up (and general browsing on the table, in company!).

My only (slight) regret is that I had the cockpit instruments installed on an oversized Scanstrut helm pod. I think we may have gotten away with something smaller (see photo). Apart from this, I am currently really happy with the choice.

    Best wishes,

    Pietro
