It is not considered advisable to fix a preventer to the middle of the boom, for the reasons stated by Jeremy above. The safest method is to attach it to the end of the boom, by whatever means that can be devised; for instance, to the attachment point for the topping lift, or a dedicated ring in the sliding track as also mentioned by Jeremy. Again fixing the forward end of it to the chainplates is somewhat unorthodox, a fitting right forward at the bow being the most favoured method, the elasticity of the required length of rope serving to absorb the destructive force encountered should the end of the boom enter the water while the boat is moving at even the slowest speed.
