Hi Larry – In the September issue of PBO I wrote an article about thrusters and my DIY installation of a retractable Sleipner/SidePower thruster in our D44. Contact me for a scan if you can’t find it.

Considerations: Tunnel thrusters MUST be deep enough to avoid cavitation which is difficult in modern designs with a flat forefoot. They must be laminated inside and out and I have heard several horror stories about poor (professional) laminating. Contrary to what seems logical, a thruster which is deep enough does not have to be at the very front of the boat. Under the bed, aft of the tank is fine. Jets are good but heavy and draw a lot of current. Retractables are good but expensive to install unless you do it yourself which is a major undertaking. They are also prone to catching lose ropes in the water.

Please lat me know what you decide and why?

    Success – Tony
